The medical toxicology elective provides focused experience with the evaluation and management of poisoned and potentially poisoned patients. During the elective, the student is based at Loyola University Medical Center and participates in patient care on the medical toxicology inpatient consult service. The student schedule includes some limited evening/night/weekend phone availability. There may also be opportunity for educational activity at the Illinois Poison Center (which is located in downtown Chicago). The objectives of the rotation are to 1) identify the scope of medical toxicology including intentional and unintentional overdose, substance abuse, hazardous material exposure, envenomation etc.; and 2) describe the basic principles of medical toxicology practice including patient assessment, antidote therapy, and enhanced elimination.
