Ultrasound Elective

The use of point of care ultrasound in the emergency department is frequently utilized to diagnose acute life-threatening conditions, assist in directing care, and guide procedures. We offer a four week emergency ultrasound elective where students have the opportunity to learn key ultrasound applications used regularly by emergency physicians. During the rotation, students will develop their image acquisition and interpretation skills through required reading materials, various didactics, bedside teaching, and autonomous practice on patients in the department. There are also opportunities to teach and attend any of the other Stritch based US teaching sessions. A minimum of 100 scans are required for students, and core applications include: eFAST, cardiac, biliary, renal, aorta, soft tissue/abscess and US guided procedures.
