MD/PhD Current Student Timeline

July

SSOM Orientation takes place one week prior to classes

August

  • Students matriculate into program.
  • FAFSA paperwork must be completed regardless of loan status.
  • Stipends commence August 1 (initial source of funding is SSOM MD/PhD program).
  • Students sign release form that authorizes release of their SSOM transcript to the MD/PhD committee on an annual basis and release of their USMLE Step 1 score when it becomes available

Students to attend the Graduate Program Directors (GPD’s) presentations on respective Program/Department. The Director of Graduate Programs will contact students with dates and times.

October-December

  • Students to discuss possible lab selections with Director of Graduate School Programs.
  • Identify a research lab for summer rotation.

June

  • Students send SSOM transcript to MD/PhD Director to confirm satisfactory MD progress and promotion following MD year 1.

June Year 1 -July Year 2

  • Students begin summer laboratory rotation (minimum duration 6 weeks—student to discuss vacation plans in advance with their advisor).

August

  • Student begin second year of medical school.
  • FAFSA paperwork must be completed regardless of loan status.

January

  • Students identify a second research lab for summer rotation OR formally identify a faculty research advisor for graduate research (based on their first year Summer experience).

June

  • Students must complete the USMLE Step 1 exam.
  • Students begin a second laboratory rotation OR begin work with their previously selected faculty research advisor.
  • MD/PhD committee requests copy of SSOM transcript to confirm satisfactory standing following MD year 2.

August

  • Student must select a faculty research advisor (if not done earlier).
  • MD/PhD program requests copy of student’s USMLE Step 1 score. Students with a failing score will develop a remediation plan with the MD/PhD committee.
  • Students attend Graduate School orientation and compliance sessions (Thursday & Friday prior to first week of classes).
  • Graduate School classes begin (Official start date is the first week of August).

February

  • Students to select a Qualifying Examination Committee 
    (Advisor plus three additional faculty members).

July

  • Students establish a date for the Qualifying Exam.

August

  • Students must successfully complete the Qualifying Exam prior to September 1.
  • The Graduate School will work with the candidate to assemble required documents that demonstrate student’s progress in meeting the Ph.D. requirements, including:
    1. Committee recommendation form
    2. Written dissertation proposal
    3. Ballot for the approval of the dissertation proposal.
  • The MD/PhD program confirms to SSOM that the student is making satisfactory academic progress in the PhD program.

February

  • Paperwork is processed to transfer student financial support from the MD/PhD program to the faculty advisor’s research funding or training grant. (March 1)

March

  • Financial support is assumed by the faculty advisor’s research funding or training grant.

April/May

  • Research Advisor, in conjunction with the student’s thesis committee, notifies the MD/PhD program director, in writing, that a student is on-track to complete the research dissertation by May of the following year. If the research program will require an additional year of work, the timeline is increased by one year and is indicated in parentheses.
  • MD/PhD program notifies SSOM (Registration & Records and Student Affairs) of the names of the students who should finish their research in the subsequent academic year and therefore are eligible for enrollment in PCM refresher.

July

  • The MD/PhD program confirms to SSOM that the student is making satisfactory academic progress in the Ph.D. program.

August-May

  • Students will complete the PCM refresher activities while also completing their Ph.D. research.

January

  • Students participate in the SSOM clerkship assignment process.
  • Students submit financial aid information in anticipation of returning to medical school.

April

  • MD/PhD committee confirms to SSOM that students are on track to start medical school clinical orientation and clerkship at end of June/start of July and that their research work will be completed by that time. If the research will not be completed, MD/PhD committee must discuss delayed clerkship start options with students.

May

  • Deadline for dual degree student to postpone the start of SSOM clerkships (due to unfinished research work) to avoid disruption to clerkship site/service assignment process.
  • Students submit their research dissertations and complete the oral defense.
  • Students submit Ballot for successful passing of the oral defense to the Graduate School.

June

  • Students complete revisions of the research dissertation as required by their thesis committee.
  • Students may not begin clinical rotations until all PhD requirements have been fulfilled.
  • Students participate in week-long intensive clerkship orientation program (“Boot-Camp”) during the last week of June.
  • FAFSA paperwork must be completed regardless of loan status.

July to May

  • Financial support for MD3 students reverts to the MD/PhD program.
  • Students engage in required and elective clinical clerkships.
  • FAFSA paperwork must be completed regardless of loan status.

July to May

  • Students engage in required and elective clinical clerkships.

September

  • MD/PhD committee and SSOM jointly review the students’ CVs that will be used in preparation of their residency “Medical Student Performance Evaluation” (the Dean's letter that completes the residency application).

December

  • Students apply for graduation from Graduate School.

January

  • SSOM confirms student’s eligibility to complete MD degree in June. MD/PhD committee confirms students’ successful completion of all requirements for the Ph.D. degree. This, in turn, enables SSOM to confirm students’ eligibility to submit a residency rank list for the Match (as required by Match Program policies). (If participating in an “early match” program, this occurs in December not January.)

March

  • Students match to residencies. (If participating in an "early match" program, this occurs in January not March.)

May

  • Students receive their MD and PhD degrees in separate commencement ceremonies.
