Loyola takes part in Maywood Village Clean-Up Day

Students, faculty, clinicians and staff at Loyola University Chicago Health Sciences Division and Loyola University Health System were some of the more than 200 volunteers who took part in Maywood’s annual Village Pride, Village Wide Clean-Up Day. Volunteers spent their morning picking up litter, debris and unsightly clutter in and around yards, streets, allies, businesses, churches and other areas throughout Maywood. 

 “This was a great opportunity for the health system, medical school and nursing school to collaborate with other local organizations and Maywood residents to come together and serve the community,” said  Lena Hatchett, PhD, Director of Community and University Partnerships, Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy, Stritch School of Medicine, who also helped organize Loyola’s involvement in the event.

Participants wore t-shirts to show their commitment to and pride in the Village of Maywood where Loyola University Medical Center, Stritch School of Medicine andMarcella Neihoff School of Nursing are located.

Other event sponsors included Triton College, Reuse Depot, Kathleen Willis State Representative 77th District, NOMCO, Good Earth Greenhouse, District 89, Proviso East High School, Subway and Checkers.

Sponsors provided funds, volunteers and even food and beverages to help the beautification effort.

“The event has sparked an outpouring individuals and businesses wanting to get involved and of those just plain grateful and excited to see village Pride,” said Loretta Brown, Maywood Environmental Beautification Commission.
