Dr. Lucian and Irene Dyba Matusak Professorship in Ophthalmology

Dr. Matusak was a graduate of the Stritch School of Medicine, Loyola University Chicago, Class of 1946. He served his internship at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Great Lakes and was a resident in general surgery at Loretto Hospital before beginning his training in ophthalmology at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary. Dr. Matusak was board certified in ophthalmology and maintained a private practice in ophthalmology on the northwest side of Chicago for more than 40 years.

Dr. Matusak was a charter member of the Medical Staff of Resurrection Hospital (1953), an affiliation he maintained until his retirement in 1995. He was an associate professor of ophthalmology at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary from 1953-1959 and the Cook County Graduate school of Medicine from 1963-1965. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and held memberships in the Chicago Ophthalmology Society, the Society of Eye Surgeons, and the Illinois Association of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Matusak also served in the Navy’s V-12 program from 1943 to 1946, which provided accelerated education during World War II. He also served in the Navy’s medical corps from 1946 to 1949. His final assignment was to the First Marine Division. He remained in the Navy Reserves until 1959.

Throughout his career, Dr. Matusak maintained an active role at Loyola University. He was a member of the President’s Advisory Council for the Stritch School of Medicine and and supported the university generously. He endowed the Dr. Lucian and Irene Dyba Matusak Professorship in Ophthalmology, in memory of his first wife.

Dr. Matusak attended St. William Catholic Church in Naples, FL and was a member of many boating organizations, including the Naples Power Squadron. He enjoyed the respect of his colleagues and high regard and affection of many long standing friends.

Lucian R. Matusak, MD, retired ophthalmologist died Monday, July 12, 1998, at the age of 77. Survivors include his wife, Carol; a daughter, Marsha Welch; a son, Robert; a brother Romuald Matuszczak, three grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
