Pharmacology is the study of the physical, chemical, biological properties and mechanisms of action of the biochemical substances, including pharmacological agents (i.e. drugs) that affect and regulate life processes.

This encompasses:

Basic Science Research – what is the molecular causation of disease?

Early Translational research – what are the likely therapeutic targets, and agents that can be used to treat disease?

Pre-clinical Translational Science – developing and testing these agents for efficacy, adverse effects and toxicity in model systems.

Clinical Translational Science – moving agents into clinical trials (with the help of doctors, Pharmacological companies and/or other medical entities) towards FDA approval.
