APPLICATION TO THE PhD PROGRAM

Important Note:  All PhD applicants will apply to the Integrated Program in Biomedical Sciences (IPBS) through the link to “Our Programs” and “PhD” then “Admissions to the PhD Program” then select "Integrated Program in Biomedical Sciences PhD". Applicants are instructed to indicate areas of interest in the Statement of Purpose, which will aid in the evaluation by the Admissions Committee, but have no bearing on acceptance. At the end of the first year, students will select a Dissertation Advisor and select one of the following six tracks of study:

  • Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
  • Cell and Molecular Physiology
  • Integrative Cell Biology
  • Microbiology and Immunology
  • Molecular Pharmacology and Therapeutics
  • Neuroscience

Each track of the IPBS will allow some flexibility for interdisciplinary study.

To be accepted for graduate study, students must have completed a Baccalaureate degree and/or coursework in relevant sciences (e.g. biology, chemistry, microbiology) from an accredited university or college. All applications are completed on-line, and there is no application fee. 

Early application is strongly encouraged.  Review of applications will begin December 1, and acceptance for admission will proceed on a rolling basis. The criteria used to evaluate an applicant for successful entry into the program include academic record and overall GPA, prior laboratory research experience/publication, personal statement and letters of recommendation.  PLEASE NOTE:  THE GRADUATE RECORD EXAM (GRE) IS NO LONGER REQUIRED FOR ADMISSION TO THE IPBS.  Only complete application files will be evaluated. Early in the year (January through March), selected applicants will be invited to visit our campus for on-site interviews, and to learn more about our program. The application deadline for Fall 2021 admission is December 31, 2020. 

International applicants must have all transcripts evaluated by Education Credential Evaluator (ECE) and must provide the Graduate School Administration office with this evaluation. In some cases, the Program may require the ECE evaluation prior to their review; please refer to individual MS Program websites for further information. International applicants must also submit a score from the TOEFL exam.  In many cases, applicants will be notified of the admission decision soon after the interview. If you do not reply to our letter of acceptance by April 15, the Graduate School has the discretion to rescind the offer of admission. Loyola University is a member of the Council of Graduate Schools and subscribes to its agreement regarding this reply date. If your application is received and considered after April 15, and if a letter of acceptance is sent to you for the Fall semester of that year, your reply may be expected within a limited, specified time frame, after which the Graduate School has the discretion to rescind the offer of admission.
 
APPLICATION TO THE MS PROGRAM
 
Students will be selected on the basis of grades, GREs, letters of recommendation, and statement of purpose. Students who show clear evidence of research potential will be given the highest priority for admission. The Admissions Committee will review applications beginning in January, and continue until available slots are filled.  NOTE THE GRE IS REQUIRED FOR ADMISSION TO THE MS PROGRAM.

The following documents are required:

  • Completed free online application formsfor the Medical Center Graduate School.
  • Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended (one set only).
  • Resume or curriculum vitae.
  • Three letters of recommendation (one set only).
  • GRE Scores (no more than 4 years old). (The Loyola GRE Institutional Code is 1412; PHAR GRE Department: 0126.). We also accept official MCAT scores (no more than 4 years old)
  • Statement of Purpose (not to exceed 4000 characters). The Statement of Purpose should outline the applicant's scientific interests, motivations for graduate study in Pharmacology, and future goals.

International applicants should also provide the following documents:

  • Official TOEFL or IELTS scores (no more than 2 years old).
  • (The Loyola TOEFL and IELTS Code is 1412; PHAR TOEFL Department: 47.)
  • Course by course evaluation of all non-U.S. transcripts by Educational Credential Evaluators.
  • Completed "Declaration and Certification of Finances Form" and supporting information, sent to:

The final application deadline is May 1 (April 1 for international applicants).  Classes at the Medical Center begin the first week of August.  There is a 2-day new student orientation on Thursday and Friday of the prior week.

APPLICATION TO THE MS/MBA PROGRAM

Applicants should submit an application, which will be evaluated sequentially by both the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and the Quinlan School of Business. The following documents are required: 

  • Completed free online application formsfor the Medical Center Graduate School. To start the application process please choose “Biomedical Sciences” and under Application Information choose “Pharmacology/business MS/MBA”.
  • Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended (one set only).
  • Resume or curriculum vitae.
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • GRE Scores (no more than 4 years old). (The Loyola GRE Institutional Code is 1412; PHAR GRE Department: 0126.) We also accept official MCAT scores (no more than 4 years old)
  • Statement of Purpose (not to exceed 4000 characters). The Statement of Purpose should outline the applicant's scientific and business interests, motivations for graduate study, future goals, and reasons for applying to the M.S /M.B.A. program.
