The purpose of the Medical Polish Student-Instructor Elective is to provide two weeks of elective course credit to those students who are fluent in the Polish language and serving as instructors for the Medical Polish Program. To achieve elective credit, the instructors will lead 20 hours of medical Polish classes and shadow a interpreter at the LUMC or a fluent attending physician who serves a large Polish patient population.
The instructors will be responsible for the preparation and execution of the teaching material provided to them in accordance with the material being taught in Patient Centered Medicine-1 (PCM-1). They will be responsible for the teaching and review of the Polish alphabet, phonetics, grammar, and vocabulary necessary for a medical student to effectively communicate in Polish in the medical setting.
Upon completion of the course, instructors will be given the opportunity to complete an interpreter certification exam consisting of two phone interviews, one written patient note (in English), and a standardized patient encounter. Successful completion of the certification exam will be acknowledged by the receipt of a badge stating certification and fluency in the Polish language. Where applicable, priority will be given to the instructors in the selection of sites in clinical clerkships that serve a Polish speaking population.

Method of evaluation:

Language skill component: upon completion of the course, instructors will participate in an interpreter certification exam consisting of two phone interviews, one written patient note in English, and a standardized patient encounter. Receipt of certification badge upon successful completion
Cultural competency component: Each instructor will submit a one page reflection on his or her experience shadowing a translator or Polish speaking attending physician.
