Effective 5/18/20:

Dear Visiting Students:

Stritch is following the AAMC/LCME recommendations regarding externships/away rotations (https://www.aamc.org/system/files/2020-05/covid19_Final_Recommendations_Executive%20Summary_Final_05112020.pdf), which state the following.

“Recommendation 1 ― Away Rotations for Medical Students

The WG (Working Group) recommends that for the 2020-2021 academic year, away rotations be discouraged, except under the following circumstances:

  • Learners who have a specialty interest and do not have access to a clinical experience with a residency program in that specialty in their school’s system.
  • Learners for whom an away rotation is required for graduation or accreditation requirements.

Individuals meeting these exceptions should limit the number of away rotations as much as possible. Students should consider geographically proximate programs, when appropriate, to meet learning needs.”

If a student meets the exceptions listed above and needs to do an away elective, they should first check with the SSOM clinical department where the rotation is housed s.  The individual departments have the final say if they will or will not host visiting students.  Some SSOM departments have already decided not to host visitors this academic year (i.e., Pediatrics).

We strongly recommend that they be a local/nearby (Indiana versus New York).  In addition, students need to be cognizant of the fact that state law or policy may require a period of quarantine before entering Illinois or returning to your home state.  In addition, visiting students are limited to 4 weeks only.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact the SSOM Office of Registration and Records.

All applications must adhere to our timetable of block period dates.

All visiting student applicants must comply with our immunization requirements, documentation of which will be reviewed by our Student Health nurse. Please note that you are required to show titer results to indicate proof of immunity. Our immunization requirements are as follows:

Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine requires students to show proof of surveillance for tuberculosis infection within 12 months of their scheduled clinical rotation and proof of immunization against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, and Tetanus, Diphtheria & Pertussis (TDAP vaccine). You also must include your laboratory titer results to prove your Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, and Hepatitis B immunity. Proof of annual influenza immunization required for rotations between November 1 and April 30.

All students, physicians and staff at Loyola University Medical Center are required to be vaccinated for the seasonal flu. Therefore, it is mandatory for all visiting students participating in electives at Loyola (and affiliated sites) to show proof of seasonal flu vaccination, beginning with the November elective rotations.
You will not be allowed to participate in your scheduled elective unless you are vaccinated and will be required to show proof of your seasonal flu vaccine before you will be allowed to begin your elective. Please provide the documentation of your vaccination to your elective coordinator upon arrival at your elective service.
Acceptable documentation includes a signed statement from the vaccine provider giving the date, type of vaccine, name and address of the provider, the manufacturer, lot number, and dose. If you have already had your flu vaccine this year but have misplaced your documentation of it, your elective coordinator will be able to give you a form to fill out attesting to this.
