Physicists from the Department of Radiation Oncology were featured in noteworthy articles published in Physics World for their research in fast-switched, dual-energy fluoroscopy tracks tumors during radiotherapy and proton imaging.  In addition, for the first time, Loyola was recognized among the top 10 institutions for clinical trial accrual at the recent NRG Oncology semi-annual meeting in Philadelphia. Congratulations to Abhishek Solanki, MD, MS, who was named a NextGen Innovator by HemOnc Today.  

Results of GOG 249, “A Phase III Trial of Pelvic Radiation Therapy Versus Vaginal Cuff Brachytherapy Followed by Paclitaxel/Carboplatin Chemotherapy in Patients with High Risk, Early Stage Endometrial Carcinoma” was recently published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology and confirmed adjuvant pelvic radiation as standard of care for high-risk, early-stage endometrial cancer.

NRG Oncology is a member of the NCI National Clinical Trials Network. It conducts practice defining, multi-institutional clinical trials resulting in the improved survival and quality of life of patients with cancer.  Loyola University Medical Center tied with Baystate Medical Center for sixth place. The top three institutions: Seoul National University Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, and University Health Network – Princess Margaret Hospital.  

Research, Grants and Awards

Faculty researchers published noteworthy articles in Hepatology and Cancer Research accepted an article about a collaborative study from three Loyola faculty.  The subject: “DAXX Suppresses Tumor-Initiating Cells in Estrogen Receptor-positive Breast Cancer following endocrine therapy.”  The corresponding author is Clodia Osipo.  Other authors include: Daniel Peiffer, Debra Wyatt, Andrei Zlobin, Ali Piracha, Jeff Ng, Andrew Dingwall, and Kathy Albain.

Last week’s 4th Annual Oncology Summer Intern Research Symposium highlighted the research of eight outstanding Loyola University Chicago undergraduate students from the Lake Shore Campus.  

We also congratulate Dr. Mauricio Bochetta for receiving a $25,000 grant from the Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago.

Welcome

As we expand our focus on fundraising to support the growth and enhancement of cancer research programs, we welcome Susan Clausen, Director of Major Gifts, Loyola University Health System. Susan will work with in the CBCC Development office with Cherie Richardson, Director of Development, Stritch School of Medicine.
