Summary of Research Interests

Dr. Bu’s research is focused on the neuroprotection of natural substances in retinal degenerative diseases such as retinal ischemia and AMD. Dr. Bu’s group have investigated the protective effects of resveratrol and sulforaphane on the retinal ischemia-reperfusion injury, paeoniflorin and kaempferol on retinal light injury (AMD) in animal models. Using the electroretinographic, retinal morphometric and immunohistochemistry methods, the goal is to develop the novel treatments to manage retinal degenerative diseases like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, hypertension retinopathy and AMD. In addition, Dr. Bu also studies therapeutic effect of probiotic bacteria or bacterial metabolite(s) in dry eye disease and its underlying mechanism. The goal is to develop potential microbial therapeutics for dry eye disease.
