Leischner Department of Medical Education- Student Curricular Innovation and Technology in Education Award
Background:
An important charge of the CCA and its subcommittee CITE (Curricular Innovation and Technology in Education) is to facilitate the use of technology in the curriculum on all levels from the discovery of needs to identifying the support needed for implementation. As technology and curricular innovations expand, and as students become increasingly involved in the curriculum, it is appropriate to explore mechanisms and incentives that would promote the goal of empowering students in their education using innovation and technology.
Rationale for the Award:
- Students often come up with insightful ways to use technology to enhance teaching and learning.
- Student involvement in creating high-quality educational resources is limited by lack of funds and support but not lack of motivation
Guiding Principles:
The award application should be structured as a research experience or innovation project involving submission of a proposal with budget and timeline. Potential areas of study include, but are not limited to:
- Citation management
- Curriculum analytics
- Electronic Medical Record in education
- Evaluation of new technology
- Gamification
- Innovative teaching methods
- Literature searching
- Multimedia/flashcards
- Retrieval practice
- Simulation
- Spaced education
Budget can be up to approximately $1000 depending on the project details.
A panel of CITE committee members will review and rank each proposal based on the quality of the application, its applicability to the curriculum, the cost, and the plans for distribution.
Awardee(s) are required to present the results at either St. Albert’s Day or a CITE meeting (depending on project completion timing) though both are encouraged when possible.
Application Process:
Applications are due on Friday, May 10th, 2024 by 5:00 PM. Those interested should should fill out the application and email to Amara Aziz. Awards will be announced late May, 2023.
Applications should not exceed 3-4 pages (single space) and should include the following:
1. Student name and relevant background (no more than 1 paragraph)
2. Faculty mentor name and relevant background (no more than 1 paragraph) (CITE committee can pair students up with an appropriate mentor if needed)
3. Background and rationale including how the proposal will compliment or supplement curriculum (no more than 1 page)
4. Project goal
5. Hypothesis
6. Research design and methods
7. References (as needed in relation to background and design)
8. Timeline – not to exceed 12 months
9. Budget with justifications for each expense. Costs will be considered in funding decisions.
Applications will be reviewed by the CITE Committee. Strong consideration will be given to those proposals with a broad curricular focus.
Brief progress reports are due 6 months following the award. Final reports will be due after 1 year. This report is in addition to the presentation of results at St. Albert’s Research Day and/or CITE meeting.
Recipients will be recognized and their awards referenced in their Dean’s Letter.
