Research

Lab Focus

We conduct clinical studies at Loyola Medicine, Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital, as well as various outpatient clinics. Faculty research a wide range of topics: from the effects of local anesthetic toxicity on peripheral nerves and possible neural regeneration and assess recovery from nerve paralysis with Bell’s Palsy using electrical stimulation of the facial nerve.

Another area of research relates to chronic pain treatment and specifically, individuals who use opioids long-term and the development of opioid-induced hyperalgesia. We also assess this issue in burn patients who have multiple, painful procedures and who receive long-term opioid treatment for pain. Other studies related to chronic pain after spinal cord injury evaluate different techniques to reduce opioid use and possible hyperalgesic effects in these individuals. Studies to evaluate the effects of medications such as carbamazepine and memantidine on opioid use and pain sensitization in spinal cord injury are in development for the spinal cord rehabilitation unit at Hines VA Hospital. Neuropathic pain is often debilitating; this clinical research has the potential to help reduce the dependence on opioids with alternative forms of therapy.
