Loyola University Chicago honors Dr. Jorge Parada with Faculty Member of the Year Award
During a year when Loyola University Chicago has faced the challenges of a global health crisis, there may be no one more deserving to win the 2020 Faculty Member of the Year than Dr. Jorge “George” Parada. “What I witnessed was a person work around the clock to methodically solve problems and answer questions while the ground continued to shift beneath us, sometimes on an hourly basis,” wrote one nominator, as he reflected on Parada’s thoughtful leadership throughout Loyola’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Parada is not only a professor of medicine at the Stritch School of Medicine, he is also a professor of public health at the Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health and the medical director and committee chair of infection prevention and control at Loyola University Medical Center (LUMC).
Over his 20-year tenure at Loyola, Parada has established a track record of leading meaningful change – from flu shots to hand-hygiene improvements to the reduction of hospital-associated infections. His research on clinical effectiveness, outcomes, and resource utilization in infectious disease focuses on quality, patient safety, and the prevention of health care associated infections – including promoting antibiotic stewardship and vaccine use. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed article and presented at more than 350 national and international scientific meetings.
In addition to his research, colleagues and students alike regard Parada as an excellent educator. He has mentored students from all three schools at the Health Sciences Campus (HSC): Stritch, Parkinson, and the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing.
