Welcome the first class of Loyola Emergency Medicine Residents

Stritch and Loyola University Medical Center welcomed its first class of six EM residents earlier this month.

“We want to train EM Physicians to lead the field of Emergency Medicine,” said Program Director David C. Snow, MD, MSc, FACEP.

Dr. Snow and his colleagues have developed a curriculum with rotations built around existing relationships in Loyola’s ICUs and specialty services; rotations that have been honed and crafted over many years to create the very best educational models. And because Emergency Medicine naturally interacts with other specialties, program leadership continues to build relationships with many colleagues in trauma, anesthesia and other specialty rotations to give EM residents every possible opportunity to develop superior patient care skills.

This inaugural class of EM residents includes: Jeffrey Heiferman, MD; Bailee Jacobsen, DO; Josue Portillo, DO; Shannon Sparrow, MD; Travis Wassermann, MD, MPH; and Andrea Yun MD, MPH.

“Our Chair, Dr. Cichon, has been instrumental in making this residency happen. Many others have given so much to make this happen, including Drs. Hantsch and Martens. My thanks to the entire EM faculty team who have worked tirelessly to build this program with a singular goal: to provide our residents with the latest educational methodology and a significant immersion experience for three years,” said Snow.

Snow notes that while this is the first EM residency, EM has been one of the most popular specialty choices for Stritch students for several years.
