St. Albert’s Day

Each fall Loyola University Medical Center celebrated its annual St. Albert’s day research symposium showcasing current research efforts within the university. This year the Department of Ophthalmology submitted a total of 14 posters at St. Albert’s day with presentations in subspecialty areas of ophthalmic pathology, ophthalmic drug delivery, pediatrics, cornea and retina.

This year, at the 36th Annual St. Albert's Day 2015, William Gange, was selected First Place in the Medical Student Oral Presentation Competition entitled "Protection of Retinal Function by Zidovudine Following Retinal Ischemic-Reperfusion Injury" Authors: William Gange MS3, Nabeel Mumtax, Paul Park, MD, Matthew Flood, MD, Jay Perlman, MD PhD, James McDonnell, MD, Liang Qiao, MD, PhD, Ping Bu, MD by the St. Alberts Day judges. Mr. Gange's poster was supported by The Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness and The Richard A. Perritt charitable Foundation.

This year, Dr. Marie Somogyi's poster entitled "Referrals and Trends Seen in Temporal Artery Biopsies at a Tertiary Care Center" Authors: Marie Somogyi, MD, David Yoo, MD, and Yasmin Shayesteh, MD, were selected as the winner in the Resident/Fellow Poster competition out of 272 submissions.

At the 36th Annual St. Albert's Day in 2015, Dr. Cynthia Pervan, was selected the winner in the postdoctoral trainee/research associate poster competition out of 272 submissions, by the St. Albert's Day judges. Dr. Pervan's poster entitled, “Constitutive Expression and Release of TGF-β2 by Human Trabecular Meshwork Cells.” Authors: Cynthia Pervan, PhD, Jonathan Lautz, Andrea Blitzer and Evan B. Stubbs, Jr., PhD. Dr. Pervan's poster was supported by Department of Veterans Affairs, the Midwest Eye-Banks, The Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness, the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital RR&D Pilot Research Program and The Richard A. Perritt charitable Foundation.

We look forward to continued growth in our research program as a means to improve patient outcomes through bench to bedside innovation in optimizing clinical care.
