In late December 2003, Dr. and Mrs. Gieser made their sixth trip to the Schell Eye Hospital in Vellore, India, accompanied by their granddaughter Hailey, Dr. Cathleen Cronin, clinical assistant professor, and Dr. Cronin’s children, Martin and Maureen Mullen. Drs. Gieser and Cronin gave lectures at the beginning and end of each day, presenting a total of six lectures each, in addition to seeing patients. Dr. Cronin was of particular assistance as there is no pediatric ophthalmologist at the hospital at this time. Mrs. Gieser, Hailey, Martin and Maureen worked in a ward for the poorest of the poor, listening with compassion to the patients’ stories. They loved the patients and gave dignity to the ward by painting colorful murals on its walls.

Traveling to Kakinada, India, Thomas John, MD, clinical associate professor, visited the Sri Kiran Eye Institute, taking part in a variety of clinical, surgical and educational activities. Dr. John taught attending physicians and fellows corneal surgical procedures, presented several lectures on related topics, and assisted in organizing the Institute’s ocular research activities. While caring for patients, he performed free eye examinations and cornea consultations and performed several complicated corneal transplants and anterior segment reconstructive surgeries.
